"I own Insurance Plus Agencies, LLC, a 7 location insurance agency in Houston, TX. I got the idea of using VOIP in about 2001. We had 4 locations at the time and was looking for ways to lower our phone bills and have employees communicate more effectively. I bought a $35,000 VOIP telephony computer that used the H323 protocol. Needless to say it did not work as advertised. We used it as a stand alone PBX at our main location until I was contacted by a Packet8 sales representative in April, 2007.
I did my homework researching Packet8 and other VOIP companies. Being weary of VOIP after my initial experience I decided to try 3 phones in 3 different locations. We used them every chance we had. They worked great! I then ordered the additional 10 phones and started porting our numbers over to Packet8.
We now have approximately 20 phones and 10 virtual numbers. Packet8 allows Insurance Plus Agencies to act as one office. No matter where an agent is working customers can be transferred to them. If a customer needs to speak directly to the Insurance Company we can transfer them there. (Ever call the Home Depot main office and ask to speak to the location nearest you? They'll tell you to hang up and call that location.) When a customer needs an insurance quote and we're all busy at one location I can transfer them to an agent that is not busy. (I no longer have to risk losing the sale or give bad customer service because I'm already helping a client.) And I haven't even mentioned the auto attendant, on-hold message, virtual extensions and the way we are now providing 24/7 sales and customer service.
Bottom line? Insurance Plus Agencies now has a state of the art multi location phone system at half the price of what we were paying for AT&T with more functionality than a $35,000 PBX.

"After Sunrocket went under, I was given choices to sign with Packet 8 or another provider by special arrangement. I mainly needed a fax line for my home office. Of several VOIP providers, only Packet 8 explained that fax service was unreliable for most voice service because of the protocols used. They sold me a less expensive ($10/mo + tax) service configured for fax which still allows me 300 min/mo of outgoing calls, either fax or voice. Kudos!"

"I've heard plenty of folks complain about Vonage lately. Don't give up on cheap phone service quite yet. Give it one more try with Packet8 (ignore the horrible techie name). I've had it for more than a year with no complaints. Sound quality and reliability are excellent. I may have dropped three calls in the past year (how many cell calls have you dropped in a year at three times the price?). It's even cheaper than Vonage per month. ... Just to hedge my bet on phone service, I kept my old number and simply dropped the service to a $12 per month metered line. This lets me dial 911 and toll-free numbers, and receive any number of inbound calls. It's like a second line that works well for a family, and it meant I didn't need to update any contact phone numbers. My Packet8 line functions as a normal line, on which I do all my outbound calls. The second line also serves as backup if the other line fails."

"The Seattle area (like most major metropolitan areas) is covered by several area codes. I recently moved from the city of Seattle to Edmonds (north of the county line)...a total distance of about 5 miles. Even though it was a relatively short distance, I could not take my phone number with me because I was moving into a different area code. Fortunately, I was able to get my number ported to Packet8 before I moved, so taking my number with me was simple. All I had to do was plug my Packet8 adapter into the Internet connection at my new home and my old number still worked. This is a powerful feature. Because of this great service, I will never have to change my phone number again."

"A friend of mine and I were hiking last week and he recounted how he has been trying to get Vonage to work via his Cable Modem (he is in the Los Gatos Mountains, so the Cable Modem service is somewhat suspect).

"The service works great. Just let new customers know to check their 'ping times' with their service provider. I had RCN cable which worked fine for a while then the ping rates went to 1106ms which made the phone service sound choppy. Unless one knows this, one might think it is Packet8 causing the problem. Not everyone is a networking expert. I switched to DSL with SBC and the ping rates are right on the money at 57ms. Service works great now."
